Testo
Là in un canyon nel lontano
ottocentotrentasei
c'era ancora un omettino
con la figlia Clementine.
O mia cara, o mia cara,
o mia cara Clementine,
mi sorridi come ai giorni
d'una favola lontan.
Era lieve come fata
e portava ai suoi piedin
una foglia d'insalata
e una piuma d'uccellin.
O mia cara, o mia cara...
Un bel giorno ad acque chete
con le ochette se ne andò;
scivolò dentro lo stagno
e impigliata vi restò.
O mia cara, o mia cara...
Affiorò su su dal fondo
qualche bolla rossa e blu;
ma nuotar io non sapevo:
Clementine or non è più.
O mia cara, o mia cara...
Nel mio sogno tu ritorni,
la tua gonna rossa a pois,
mi sorridi come ai giorni
d'una favola lontan.
O mia cara, o mia cara...

Versione inglese[1]
In a cavern, in a canyon,
Excavating for a mine
Dwelt a miner forty-niner,
And his daughter Clementine.
Oh my darling, Oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine,
You are lost and gone forever,
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.
Light she was and like a fairy,
And her shoes were number nine,
Herring boxes, without topses,
Sandals were for Clementine.
Oh my darling...
Drove she ducklings to the water
Ev'ry morning just at nine,
Stubbed her toe against a splinter,
Fell into the foaming brine.
Oh my darling...
Ruby lips above the water,
Blowing bubbles, soft and fine,
But, alas, I was no swimmer,
So I lost my Clementine.
Oh my darling...
In a corner of the churchyard,
Where the myrtle boughs entwine,
Grow the roses and the posies,
Fertilized by Clementine.
Oh my darling...
Then the miner, forty-niner,
Soon began to peak and pine,
Thought he oughter join his daughter,
Now he's with his Clementine.
Oh my darling...
In my dreams she still doth haunt me,
Robed in garments soaked in brine;
How in life I used to hug her,
Now she's dead, and I draw the line.
Oh my darling...
Varianti
Nella versione inglese esiste anche un'ottava strofa umoristica, scritta non si sa da chi:
Listen Boy Scouts, heed the warning:
In this tragic tale of mine
Artificial respiration
Would have saved my Clementine!
La traduzione è la seguente:
Ascoltate Boy Scouts, seguite l'avvertimento:
in questa tragica storia di miniera
la respirazione artificiale
avrebbe salvato la mia Clementine!
